Description

William Hedley's 0-8-0 Wylam locomotive (1815, Wylam Colliery) or William Chapman's Lambton locomotive (1814, River Wear colliery) ?

This drawing was given by William Hedley to Nicholas Wood who published it in 1825 in his book A Practical Treatise on Rail-roads. It is supposed to describe a Wylam locomotive with the new wheel arrangement (~ 1815). In fact the drawn locomotive is almost identical with the River Wear locomotive designed by William Chapman in 1814. It was the first 8 wheel locomotive and was probably taken as an example by Hedley to make his originally 4 wheel locomotive (Puffing Billy, 1814) more compliant with the weakness of period rail-roads.
