Description
English: Drawing of the holotype specimen, Iziko South African Museum (SAM) PK-1070, of the Permian amniote Heleosaurus scholtzi Broom 1907, counterpart blocks, with indication of skull bones (from Carroll, 1976, modified; follow source link below for bibliographical details on the original work). Note that Carroll identified H. scholtzi as an early diapsid (“eosuchian”) whereas today it is regarded a varanopid synapsid.[1] Meaning of anatomical abbreviations:

This is a retouched picture, which means that it has been digitally altered from its original version. Modifications: In order to obtain a nice-looking, clean drawing from the scanned image, the image was set to greyscale, and brightness and contrast were enhanced, and then areas at the lower margin that were still greyish were clipped. After this was done, the two drawings were re-arranged in a way that makes the fact, that the apparently two specimens are counterparts of each other, more obvious to the viewer..
