Summary

Description
English: The photo is of the National Register Historic Barnett Hospital and Nursing School located at 1201 Seventh Ave., Huntington, WV. The building was a black hospital and nursing school owned and operated by a black physician, Dr. CC Barnett, and his wife, Superintendent Clara Barnett. The hospital was founded in 1912, the nursing school in 1918, and Dr. Barnett lost the building in the stock market crash. Dr. Barnett was a renowned surgeon and first cousin of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the father of black history. The building then served as the City of Huntington "City Hospital" during the depression from 1929-1939 serving the low-income of all races and ethnic groups. Local labor unions purchased, in 1947, and operated out of the building until 2007 when Karen and Johnny Nance purchased the building. Very little was changed from the days it housed a hospital on the second and third floors of the building. The first floor was altered by the union and the Nance's that constructed a five-bedroom apartment in the old union offices. Detail information can be found in the building's National Register nomination, December 2009, and/or by telephoning Karen Nance at 304-412-1601. It is up for sale.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 86534925.
