Key: GREY=proportion in which their historical/traditional definition of marriage was unchanged. In some cases court decisions or executive order explicitly determined this to intend heterosexual marriage only. BLUE=proportion with a law enacted to prohibit same-sex marriage or explicitly define marriage as heterosexual. YELLOW=proportion with a constitutional ban/definition of marriage as heterosexual. This includes states with both legislative and constitutional bans. GREEN=proportion with state-wide legal same-sex marriage. RED=span of time during which Defense of Marriage Act prohibited federal recognition of same-sex marriage and permitted states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages from other states.
