Hypotriorchis femoralis. (Caption error in original source. This is the California race of the Red-shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus elegans.) From: Reports of Explorations and Surveys.... Volume X. 1859 of the U. S. Pacific railroad Explorations and Surveys 38th, 39th, 41st Parallels. Copied from NOAA Photo Library.

This image doesn't look right to me for either an adult or juvenile Aplomado Falcon. According to field guides and to photographs on the Web, the back, wings, and tail are about right for an adult. However, the bill should be mostly light-colored; the dark mark through the eye and the dark "moustache" should diverge instead of joining; the lower belly, the thighs, and the pale areas on the face and neck should be free of dark marks; the chest might be longitudinally streaked (juvenile) but shouldn't have chevron marks; and the lower breast, upper belly, and flanks should be much darker than the rest of the underparts.

So I recommend that you don't use this picture to illustrate this species. You could use it to illustrate "inaccurate paintings", though.

This is a Red-shouldered Hawk--the legends from NOAA or the original publication for this and the plate of the adult Aplomado Falcon are in error. See the comments I made on the discussion (talk) page for this image. The original reference to Buteo lineatus, again, transferred to another plate in this series in error, refers to the California race of the Red-shouldered Hawk, Buteo lineatus elegans, see, for instance Animal Diversity Web account. --Cotinis 01:47, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
