Nashville-Tenn. (May 3, 2010) Water as high as waist deep spilled into the streets of Nashville on May 2, 2010. The federal government on Tuesday authorized a major disaster declaration for the Middle Tennessee counties of Cheatham, Davidson, Hickman and Williamson. Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen asked President Obama Monday to declare 52 counties federal disaster areas following the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that struck the state beginning Friday, April 30. Across the state, at least 18 fatalities have been confirmed due to flooding including nine in Nashville and Davidson County. The Cumberland River crested at 51.8 feet between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday and has begun to recede. Experts expect the river to be below flood level, or below 40 feet, by the end of the week.
