Summary

Description Cylindropuntia munzii—Munz's Cholla. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.3 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). From the Coloradan (Sonoran) desert of southeastern California in Chocolate and Chuckwalla mountains. Also occurs in Baja California. Considered for many years as hybrid between Cylindropuntia bigelovii and Cylindropuntia echinocarpa, C. munzii was raised to species status about twenty years. This is one cholla that often reaches tree size. Most U.S. populations are relatively inaccessible because of terrain and location on military installations. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
