Summary

Description

James Conder was the first to catalog the late 18th Century British Provincial coinage. Today, such unofficial tokens are called 'Conder Tokens.'

Genuine small change was not being produced by the government, per King George III, and leave was granted for privately struck tokens to circulate. It was the height of the Industrial Revolution, and they had suddenly developed the steam engine and the steam coin press, had built the first iron bridge, and an iron ship, apparently a sailing barge. People were moving from barter to use of currency, and it was badly needed.

This token advertised Mr. Conder's drapery shop, and he was an avid coin collector.

This is a very gratifying find, found on ebay, and which arrived recently.
