| Description |
English: This is a portrait of Jeseok, the Korean shamanistic deity of fertility. The portrait was one of twelve paintings worshipped at the shamanic shrine of Naewat-dang, Jeju Island, South Korea, which was destroyed in 1882. The paintings were rescued by the shaman who had served the shrine, and passed to the Jeju National Museum when the shaman's wife died in 1963. While not of high quality aesthetically, they are important as the only known shamanic paintings from Jeju Island, where shamans traditionally do not visually depict their gods. While it is impossible to know precisely when the painting was made, the gods' robes reflect mid-Joseon (sixteenth-century) fashion. |
