Summary

[edit]

James C. Manning III (May, 29, 1929), American author, was born in Brooklyn (NY) to the late Helen and James C. Manning II. He married Bette Anne Manning (former Reilly), also of Brooklyn and they had three children. Using a fake identification card, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1945 and reenlisted at the beginning of the Korean Conflict. He joined the New York City Police Department in 1955 and assumed several positions during his 27 year career including a member of the TPF (Tactical Patrol Force) and as a sergeant in Emergency Service. During this time and from his experiences he wrote the novel “Blue Invective,” which was published by Bobbs-Merrill (NY, 1973). This book was the first book published by a member of the NYPD while still on active duty. While using fictional characters, it gave and accurate portrayal of the life of a cop in an American ghetto, breaking with the sterile, unrealistic depiction of day-to-day police work as shown in Adam-12 and McCloud. He launched a police genre that resulted in modern police shows focused on the NYPD such as “NYPD Blue” and “Law and Order.”
