Description
English: Gallery Label:

This view from the left bank of the Seine River encompasses the Tuileries Gardens and the Louvre at left and the Palais d'Orsay and Hôtel de Salm (Palais de la Légion d'Honneur) at right. The inclusion of the laundry barge and industrial cranes underscores the importance of the river to the Parisian working class.

After arriving in France in the late 1840s from Holland, Jongkind often sketched scenes along the banks of the Seine. Later, in his studio, he transformed his sketches into oil paintings such as this one, which was included in the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
