Description

Carved work by Charles Mawer, salvaged from Kirkgate Market, Bradford in 1973 by Bradford City Council. The market was designed by Lockwood & Mawson, completed 1872, demolished 1973.

In 2014 seven carved stones and an iron lamp base were rescued from storage by a local action group. They were placed on public display on the steps of Merchant's House, Peckover Street, Little Germany, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Showing the back of the stone which has garlands on the other sides. The stone may have been placed on display upside-down because garlands hang; they don't arch. The back of this stone has a preparation for a garland carving, showing how the sculptor worked.
