Summary

Description
English: The substantial pier in the center of the photograph was built by the Canadian government to allow refrigerated ships to load the Grand Banks catch of LaPoile Bay fishermen. When the photo was taken in 1971, fishermen reported receiving 5 cents per pound for Atlantic cod and 7.5 cents per pound for halibut. Smaller piers constructed of local scrub conifer tree species were more typical of outport facilities.
