| Description | This true-color image of Typhoon Mawar over the open Western Pacific was captured on the afternoon of May 23, 2023, at 03:40 UTC, which corresponds to 01:40 P.M. in Guam, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument flying aboard NASA's Aqua polar-orbiting satellite. Mawar is the fourth depression, second named or namable storm, first typhoon, and first super typhoon of the 2023 West Pacific typhoon season. When this image was taken, Mawar was rapidly intensifying, approaching its initial peak intensity which it would ultimately achieve a few hours later, while approaching the U.S. territory of Guam. The intensity of the typhoon when this image was taken was winds of 170 km/h (105 mph) (90 knots) on the 10-min Japan Meteorological Agency typhoon scale, making it a "Very Strong Typhoon" on the scale, and according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, it had 1-min sustained winds of 250 km/h (155 mph) (135 knots) making it equivalent to a "Category 4 major hurricane," on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, the official minimum central pressure (provided by the JMA) was at or around 945 mbar (27.9 inHg), based on estimates between advisories. |
