Summary
| Description | Ciutadella - Façana de la catedral. Temple principal de Menorca dedicat a Santa María. Alfons II en disposà la construcció a la conquesta de l´illa (1278). És gòtica, d´una sola nau i amb dotze capelles laterals. El campanar de planta quadrada, era probablement el minaret de l´antiga mesquita. Incendiada durant el saqueig turc (1558), en caigueren les voltes de la part del presbiteri el 1626, la darrera clau de les quals fou reposada el 1634.Al principi del segle XVIII fou afegida la capella de les Ànimes, barroca, i entre el 1813 i el 1890, la del Santíssim, d´estil corinti. El 1795, amb la creació de la diòcesi de Menorca, n´esdevingué la catedral. El 1953 li fou concedit el títol de basílica. |
