Description
English: Cartoon in the Port Elizabeth Observer newspaper 1877 attacking the Cape Town based government of Molteno for its reluctance to embark on imperial expansion. John X Merriman the Commissioner for Public Works is shown reluctantly obeying the Governor Bartle Frere's orders to expand the frontier into the Xhosa Kingdom of Kreli. Commandant Griffiths holds the tools of Police and Volunteers but asks for military aid which Merriman declines. Artist is CJ Barber.
