Three Military Saints
Early 20th century Oil on panel Chapel of St. Cornelius, Governor's Island, New York
Governor's Island was for many years a military installation. These images of military saints are on the left side of the Chapel's [Reredos|reredos].
Whoever put the labels beneath the images got them confused. The first saint on the left, with his elaborate armor and dragon, is undoubtedly St. George, not St. Martin of Tours, who is in the middle image with the poor man to whom he gave the half-cloak. The saint on the right is indeed St. Cornelius.
