Hi,

I’m Hannah Bremner, an Archivist/Archives Advisor in the Disposal & Acquisition team at Archives New Zealand in Wellington. My team provides advice to public offices around the disposal of public records including identifying records of long term archival value to be transferred to Archives New Zealand’s collection.

It’s a pretty difficult task to find a favourite amongst Archives New Zealand’s rich and diverse collection….but here goes! The National Publicity Studios (NPS) photographic collection is a real gem – archives.govt.nz/research/guides/photographs-wellington#nat . I started my career as an archivist working with the NPS collection taking part in pilot digitisation project in 2009 as a part of an academic placement.

The NPS collection is made up of thousands of images depicting a vast array of subjects, from grazing sheep and farm life to leisure activities, swinging parties, cosmopolitan scenes, cocktail drinking and skiing. These photographs were taken to promote and publicise New Zealand and it’s culture during (c1940s – 1980s).

The image above shows a wharenui located in Nuhaka. It has significance to my family as an archive that connects us to our area and whenua. It is a part of a series of photographs depicting Nuhaka, Ngāti Kahungunu Marae and the Mahia Peninsula in the 1940’s.
