Summary

Description
English: NSWR H Young Class C38 4-6-2 No.3820 in black livery in the Great Hall at Trainworks, the New South Wales Railway Museum, Thirlmere, 31 March 2016. 5 streamlined C38's were built by Clyde Engineering in 1942-45 (in grey livery and known as the 'Grey Nurses') followed after the war by an unstreamlined version: 13 by NSWR Eveleigh and 12 by NSWR Cardiff. Young originally wanted to order a streamlined Pacific Garrett (based on PLM Garratt for Algeria) from Beyer Peacock but was prevented from doing so by the NSW Government which wanted a home grown product so he designed the C38's which were very modern with a cast steel bed, 5'9" Boxpok wheels, boiler with a 245 psi (highest in Australia) and a combustion chamber, Franklin power reverse, roller bearings throughout, 2 21.5" X 26" wheels (originally 4, then 3 cylinders were proposed) and a 47 sq ft grate with mechanical stoker (though in the event this was not fitted). They had a tractive effort of 36,273 lbs and could exert 2,020 dbhp continuously. They weighed 112 tons. They were withdrawn in 1961-70. No.3820 hauled the last steam-haled Newcastle Flyer to Sydney in 1970.
