Summary
DescriptionNewnham Bridge railway station (geograph 4329077).jpg |
English: Newnham Bridge railway station The station was on the line from Woofferton, just south of Ludlow, to a junction with what is now the Severn Valley Railway just north of Bewdley. It was known as the Wyre Forest line and between Woofferton and Newnham Bridge the railway was built largely on the route of the never - completed Leominster Canal. Well, I say "never completed", but it did in fact open and operate for around 60 years: it just never made a profit or reached its intended destination. Newnham Bridge was originally known simply as "Newnham" and is in fact still shown as such on some maps, but when the railway opened the GWR decided to append the word "Bridge" to the name, probably in order to avoid confusion with the GWR railway station at Newnham in Gloucestershire. The station was, until fairly recently, a garden centre, and in fact until I drove past it the other day, I thought it still was as it appeared to be thriving in that role the last time I saw it. But it's obviously derelict, and becoming more unkempt by the day. I hope someone rescues it: the platforms and the down side waiting shelter are both intact as well as the main station building. |
