Summary
DescriptionOld Rosa Coplon Jewish Home and Infirmary, Symphony Circle, Front Park, Buffalo, NY.jpg |
English: Built in 1953, this modern building was designed by architect Milton Milstein to house the Rosa Coplon Jewish Home and Infirmary, which opened in 1924 to serve elderly Yiddish-speaking Orthodox Jewish people. The retirement home was located in this building until 1993, when it moved to the suburbs of the city, with the building subsequently becoming home to the Grace Manor Nursing Home, which went bankrupt in 2009. The building since has been repurposed, appearing to presently house a Behavioral Health Center. The building features a buff brick facade with a curtain wall featuring ribbon windows and blue spandrel panels on the Symphony Circle Facade, with a low-profile curved and cantilevered aluminum canopy at the original main entrance facing the circle, with a series of blue panels next to the entrance door having Hebrew and English writing carved into it, stating “Honor thy father and thy mother” and the date 1953, with a sandstone relief of an elderly Jewish couple on the buff brick facade above, a low-slope roof, and an older wing to the rear, with portion of the main wing at the corner of Symphony Circle and Wadsworth Street having been modified from its original design, now featuring vertical glass curtain walls where there were once large expanses of buff brick, and having been modified to accommodate new main entrance off a driveway, with the rear part of the main wing of the building being relatively unadorned, with several oriels clad in glass curtain walls and spandrels, and large curtain walls at the stairways of the building. An older building to the rear is clad in red brick, predating the rest of the complex and featuring a tall circulation tower that was once connected to a since-demolished portion of the complex that sat at the corner of North Street and Arlington Place, of which only the party wall on the rear wing remains. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Allentown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. |
