Description
English: On board the destroyer Laforey (1913) at moorings in Harwich harbour

On board the destroyer LAFOREY (1913) of the 9th Destroyer Flotilla while she is at moorings in Harwich harbour in mid 1916. The GANGES shore establishment at Shotley is in the background. The photographer is looking forward from abreast the mainmast on the port side of the upper, or iron, deck and the photograph shows some of the crew in the process of repainting the ship from black to grey. Of note are the gunnery range board abaft No. 2 funnel, the range clock and repeater on the bridge, the searchlight, the torpedo davit and the carley raft and torpedo sight on the aft bank of torpedo tubes. Just beyond the left shoulder of the officer is the ship’s battle honours scroll. A motor lighter is alongside unloading stores.
