Description
English: PLUMBBOB/LASSSEN - LAS VEGAS, NV -- Atomic cloud resulting from detonation of the first atomic device to be fired from a captive balloon is shown 5 seconds after detonation. Shot was fired from a height of 500 feet 40 minutes before dawn, at 4:45 a.m. in Yucca Flat. Fallout from the test, announced as “well below nominal” in yield, was recorded only in the immediate test area. Helium-filled balloon was 67 feet in diameter, held in place by four steel cables, winches for which are remotely controlled. Photo was taken from aircraft 5 ½ miles from Ground Zero, with ½ second exposure at F-8.
