Summary[edit]

Two photographed panels of Bill Perry (cartoonist) art for Gasoline Alley

Fair use for Bill Perry (cartoonist)[edit]

Though this image, which I have myself imaged from the original art for the Gasoline Alley comic strip (dated SUNDAY, 02/16/69), is subject to © 1969 Universal Press Syndicate , its use here is regardless covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:

  1. The image representatively illustrates an educational article about the comic strip artist; its inclusion in the article adds significantly to understanding the text because it is a historical sample of the Perry art covered in the critical commentary, and addresses his stated ability to mimic King's style. Therefore the image substantially improves the educational value of the article.
  2. The image is used as the primary means of visual identification of the article topic, which directly concerns a visual artist.
  3. It is of much lower resolution than the original, and only two panels are shown. Any potential copies made from it would be of very inferior quality and unsuitable for any commercial purpose. The image is not used here for profit, and its use on Wikipedia does not compete with the copyright holder, Universal Press Syndicate, and such use does not decrease the value of the copyright to its holder.
  4. It is not in any way replaceable with an uncopyrighted or freely copyrighted image pertinent to the work referenced in the article, because the whole body of Perry's published work under discussion in this section of the article is © Universal Press Syndicate
