English: Cartoon of 1906. The physician has placed a Laennec wooden stethoscope between his left ear and the patient's back. "A contemporary cartoon depicts a physician of fashion placing his stethoscope wherever he found a spot on her body which was not covered by her corset. Undressing and redressing would have been too time-consuming had women shed their corsets in their doctor's office. The corseted patient became a way of life for the average physician." (Schwarz) |
