Description

Richardsonian Romanesque by Frederick Osterling. Building is believed to have been the manse for a Presbyterian church that is no longer there. Now a part of the University of Pittsburgh.

The stonework is interesting. At the bottom on the water table very large stones are used. On the first story, the stone is finer and laid up randomly. On the second story, regular courses of uniform thickness ashlar are used. During the Gothic Revival, Pugin pointed out that random stonework avoids distracting attention from other features. Regular coursing forms patterns which become a features themselves. Osterling was a devoted Medievalist, and so was no doubt familiar with Pugin and his theories - and applied them to Romanesque.
