Description
Français : Le montage photographique de la famille royale de Tahiti, exécuté vers 1880, par le photographe Hoare, donne, en haut, une image de Pomaré III (1820-1827). Il est représenté avec des cheveux coupés à l'européenne et une-raie à droite, de grands yeux et un type plutôt maori. On discerne un col « Eton ». Nous n'avons trouvé nulle part l'original de ce dessin qui est probablement l'œuvre de quelque missionnaire de l'époque, Orsmond par exemple. Bolton, dans les articles précités (avril 1938, p. 1 7) a publié, prétend-il pour la première fois, une image un peu différente et un peu plus européanisée du jeune roi. — a This picture has unique value — it was found after years of search. » — Il est regrettable que Bolton n'ait pas été plus explicite sur l'origine de ce dessin, qu'une simple inspection laisse supposer être un travail exécuté d'après le cliché Hoare. — Sur le pavillon : Cottez, Essai sur les pavillons océaniens (B.S.E.O., n° 90, mars 1950, p. 17 et ss.).
