Summary
[edit]Description | Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 (circled in yellow) seen on secondary radar around the time of its disappearance. The aircraft is at 36,300 feet (11,100 m) and climbing with a ground speed of 353 knots (654 km/h; 406 mph). The ground speed is too slow for the aircraft's altitude to maintain flight. According to an aviation expert, it is "approximately 100 knots too slow"(source). |

The Aviation Herald described this image as an AirNav Indonesia Radar screen shot.[1] |
Source (WP:NFCC#4) | Original publication: Unknown. According to CNN, the image "comes from an Indonesian pilot who was given the screen grab anonymously by an air traffic controller who had been tracking the flight." Immediate source: Twitter (Gary Soejatman) |

Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 |
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | This image captures an important piece of evidence related to the subject of the article. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
There has been much misinformation in the aftermath of the aircraft's disappearance; therefore, providing this image for readers is more authoritative/trustworthy than information quoted from the media. At some point, probably several months from the disappearance and once more information is available about the aircraft's exact location, a freely-licensed illustration could be produced and this image will no longer be necessary. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | The file will only be used on one article where it is relevant. It is not of high-resolution or large size. It is of high enough resolution to discern the labels while the image is large enough to show the aircraft's location in relation to Belitung & Borneo. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
Except for the yellow circle, this is a faithful reproduction of the radar screen (ie. there is no creative element in taking/framing the image and thus the photo taker has no copyright claim), the copyright is vested in the operator of the radar, believed to be the Indonesian Transportation Ministry. It is unlikely that the commercial opportunities of this government agency will be harmed by the fair use of this image in the Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501. The fair use of this image does not harm the Indonesian Transportation Ministry's claim to copyright and ability to sell the image to other parties. |
