284 FREEMAN, No. 59. Five motions, viz: Cocked; opened; loaded; closed; fired. Opened.—By cocking the piece and pulling back the horn of thebreech-block. Closed.—By pushing the horn forward with the right hand, the bevelon the left face of the breech-block pushing the cartridge home. Locked.—By the position of the breech-block, it is also kept from turn-ing, by the front segment of the hammer engaging with a correspondinggroove in the back of the block. Fired.—By a center-lock of the usual pattern. Extraction.—By a bent lever pivoted below the chamber and struckby the ejector-cam, which, turning with the breech-block in opening thepiece, rides over the curved horn of the extractor and draws back itsupper end, carrying with it the cartridge-shell. Ejection.—-By a flat spring riding on a cam formed on the hub of theextractor, and thereby accelerating its action on the cartridge-shellwhen the latter has been started from its seat in the chamber in the actof opening the piece.
