Taking Destiny into His Own Hands

Born into slavery, Robert Smalls catapulted to fame in both North and South when he stole

a Confederate boat, the Planter, sailed it past Charleston’s forts, and turned it over to Union blockading ships. After the Civil War, Smalls was elected to a variety of public officesand fought for equal rights for African Americans.
