Description
English:
Coat of arms of w:Muzio Attendolo Sforza, founder of the Sforza dynasty: Quarterly gules and barry nebulée argent and azure. Also used by his son w:Francesco I Sforza, and by w:Ludovico Sforza
Original w:canting arms of the w:House of Sforza, as Counts of w:Cotignola/Codognola, Romagna (Sforza (ancient)): Azure, a lion rampant or armed and langued gules holding with its front paws a branch of quince (codogno) vert fructed or

Central panel of tryptich. Early Netherlandish paintings in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. Depicting w:Alessandro Sforza (1409-1473), an Italian condottiero, lord of Pesaro, the first of the Pesaro line of the Sforza family. He was born in w:Cotignola in 1409, an illegitimate son of the famous condottiero w:Muzio Attendolo Sforza, founder of the Sforza dynasty. Depicted with either his first wife w:Costanza Varano (1428–1447) (whom he married in 1444, died in childbirth 1447), or his second wife w:Sveva da Montefeltro. The identity of the younger man kneeling at left is unknown, but he displays the Sforza coat of arms on his tabard. Possibly his son w:Costanzo I Sforza (1447-1483) (whose mother died giving birth to him), thus suggesting the lady to be Alessandro's second wife w:Sveva da Montefeltro. By his first wife he had one son and one daughter:

Two examples of early coats of arms of the Sforza family, as seen on the donor's shield (right) and on the tabard of the man at left. Arms as Counts of w:Cotignola, a title granted by Pope John XXIII. Also today the Coat of arms of the commune of w:Cotignola. Canting element: Quince = mela cotogna (Italian) = codogno (Venetian), from Latin cotoneum, from Greek κυδώνιον ("kudonion") (WordSense Online Dictionary (15th May, 2024) URL: https://www.wordsense.eu/codogno/). Pope John XXIII made w:Muzio Attendolo Sforza conte de Codognola, the place of Attendolo's birth. "Muzio attendolo da Cotignola, capostipite degli Sforza".
