Summary

Description
English: Photo of ruin marble taken in the Natural History Museum, London. Ruin marble gets its name from the pattern of light and dark components that give it the appearance of a ruined city-scape. Like all marble this stone began as a calcium carbonate deposit that consolidated into limestone. Marble forms when limestone metamorphoses as a result of being buried and subjected to heat and pressure. In this case the process has led to the distinctive patterned appearance.
