Summary

Description

"Building of Puget Sound News Co.", from brochure Seattle and the Orient (1900). Not sure of location or of whether this building is still standing. The Puget Sound News Co. (founded 1894, part of the American News Company), which owned numerous small newspapers in the Pacific Northwest, moved several times in its history.

According to Polk's Seattle City Directory 1899 (Polk's Seattle Directory Co., 1899), p. 797, the company was at the corner of Western Ave. and Columbia Street. I think, though I'm not sure, that the lower portion of this survives as part of the Journal Building, also known as Journal of Commerce Building / Daily Journal Building. See Summary for 83 Columbia ST / Parcel ID 7666202580, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods: they are clearly uncertain about the history of that building, what parts of it date from when, etc. Hope this picture helps sort some of it out.
