Lateral view of a side-lever engine of the SS Pacific (1849). The engine was built by the Allaire Iron Works of New York. In the diagram, the engine cylinder A-A moves the side-rod B-D which oscillates the side-lever D-F which moves the connecting rod G-H to rotate the eccentric I around the crankshaft J, which in turn rotated the paddlewheel (not shown). As with all side-lever engines, a similar side-rod, side-lever and connecting rod assembly would be fitted to the other side of the engine via the crosshead (B). | |||
