Waagen (1857) Galleries and cabinets of art in Great Britain: being an account of more than forty collections of paintings, drawings, sculptures, mss. &c. &c. visited in 1854 and 1856, and now for the first time described, London: John Murray, p. 283, as ‘A wide canal frozen, with villages on the bank, and with a sledge, skaiters, and other persons upon it. In the foreground, towards the left, are some leafless trees. The delicate aërial perspective, and the mild warm tone, especially of the sky, render this picture very attractive. The treatment shows the early time of the master’.
