DescriptionSpanish-American War Nurses Memorial - marker - Arlington National Cemetery - 2011.JPG
English: The Spanish-American War Nurses Memorial in Section 21 at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States.
Nurses were first organized as a unit of the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American War. Many of the nurses who died in the war were interred in Section 21 at Arlington. In 1901, the Society of Spanish American War Nurses asked for and received permission to erect a memorial to nurses who died in the war at the cemetery. The memorial was dedicated on May 22, 1902. It consists of a rough, grey granite megalith which faces west. A Maltese cross -- the insignia of the Society -- is carved into the upper portion of the stone. Below it are a sheaf of palm leaves (indicating the tropical nature of the war) on which is placed a wreath of laurel leaves. Below is an inscription to "Our Comrades." On the rear of the memorial, the Maltese cross image is repeated. Below it, a dedicatory brass plaque is affixed.
Although two graves (Ella Gillen and Samuel Fitz Gerald) to the west appear to be part of the memorial, they are not.
