DescriptionStaithes off Alder Street , Hillhouse, Fartown (1) - geograph.org.uk - 258899.jpg
English: Staithes off Alder Street , Hillhouse, Fartown (1) These are also known as coal drops, although they may have been used for other materials. On top were the Hillhouse sidings, and railway wagons were unloaded and the material dropped into carts below. Each bay has a system of hatches operated by a rack and pinion system. The rail track in the foreground led to one of the chutes. It crossed Alder Street and went along Whitestone Road to join the tramway in Bradford Road. Huddersfield Corporation had two coal trams to deliver coal to local mills.
