English: Politician and grazier William Miles, Brisbane, 1877
William Miles was born 5 May 1817 at Stateford in Scotland. He came to New South Wales in 1837, working for six years on the Macleay River. From 1844 till 1853 he worked in the New England area of New South Wales and in 1853 he moved stock to the Dawson River. From 1857 till 1861 he was leasee of Kinoul Station. He later acquired Dularea, Condamine, Mitchell and Gregory runs. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly for many years (1864 - 1887), Colonial Secretary in 1877, Secretary for Public Works (1877 - 1878) and Secretary for Public Works and Mines (1883 - 1887). William died in Toowoomba on 22 August 1887. (Description supplied with photograph). |
