English: Family funerary stele of the Novii of ancient Mutina (Modena, Italy), preserved in the Estense Lapidary Museum of Modena. Dated AD 14–50. From Aemilia, Regio VIII. The cropping of the photograph excludes most of the Latin inscription, for which see CIL XI, 853. Mentioned (some names are highly reconstructed) are Lucius Novius Apollinaris, the son of Lucius, a decurion of Mutina, to whom the cippus is primarily dedicated; the liberta (freedwoman) Novia Donatilla, to whom it is also dedicated; the person who set up the monument, Lucius Novius Chryseros Apollinaris, the libertus (freedman) of a Lucius who is likely the decurion; and Novia Spatale, who was still living. As indicated by the portraiture, all four were eventually to be entombed there.
