Description |
Painting tableaux by Steven Hull, Stack Painting (not titled), (acrylic on canvas with artificial flowers, 1999. Neues Museum, Nuremberg, Germany). The image illustrates period and body of work in Steven Hull's career in the late 1990s and early 2000s when he produced paintings that were characterized as challenging and sometimes confrontational in their mix of visual acumen, dissonant styles, and aggressive gesture and color. During this time, he often pursued irreverent conceptual and presentation strategies such as multiple panels and stacked canvasses (as in this case) that complicated or subverted traditional genres and gallery practices and disrupted modernist paradigms such as intentionality, the expressive "truth" of gesture, and rigid distinctions between abstraction and figuration. His exhibitions often coupled chaotic, fluorescent stripe paintings, jarring field paintings, and others in which he applied wads of artificial flowers. This work and this body of work have been publicly exhibited in prominent venues and museums and discussed in major art and daily press publications. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a period and body of work in Steven Hull's career in the late 1990s and early 2000s: his early painting, which critics suggest disrupted modernist paradigms such as intentionality, the expressive "truth" of gesture, and rigid distinctions between abstraction and figuration. This painting was characterized as challenging and sometimes confrontational in its mix of visual acumen, dissonant styles, and aggressive gesture and color, often coupling chaotic, fluorescent stripe paintings, jarring field paintings, and others in which he applied wads of artificial flowers. During this time, he also pursued irreverent conceptual and presentation strategies such as multiple panels and stacked canvasses that complicated or subverted traditional genres and gallery practices. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize a key foundational body of work, which brought him early recognition from art and daily press and museums. Hull's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article. |
