Summary

Description

c/n 6S/21840 Built 1939 for the Fleet Air Arm but diverted to the Irish Air Corps along with L2302 and L2303. On 9th January 1942 it was stolen by four Irish nationals who attempted to fly it to Cherbourg to join the Luftwaffe, until they were intercepted by Spitfires and escorted into St Eval. Aeroplane and ‘crew’ were later returned to Ireland under guard. Sold to Aer Lingus in August 1945, it was allocated the Irish civil registration EI-ACC but never entered service. During 1947 it was sold to Wing Commander R.G.Kellet of 615 (County of Surrey) sqn, Royal Auxiliary Air Force, and used by squadron members for bathing parties before being retired during 1948 and dumped. It was recovered in 1963 by the Historic Aircraft Preservation Society (HAPS) and donated to the Fleet Air Arm Museum. It was restored at RNEC Arbroath and arrived at Yeovilton for display in December 1966. Seen on display in Hall 1 as part of the ‘100 Years of Search and Rescue’ exhibiton.
