Description |
Mixed media, "Burst: incapable of control, her temper was inspired as a marvelous wildness" (lambda print, 39” x 26", 2003) by artist Susan Sensemann. The photomontage illustrates a key later period and type of work in Susan Sensemann’s career during the late 1990s and early 2000s when she created photomontage from images superimposing photographs she took of organic substances and art objects over intimate close-ups of her face, which received widespread recognition. These works were exhibited extensively and reviewed in numerous art journals and daily press publications. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key later-career body of work and practice in the artist's oeuvre, which reflected her continuing use of feminist critique and practice and growing interest in Gothic sensibilities: the photomontages Sensemann created superimposing photographs she took of organic substances and art objects over intimate close-ups of her face in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this body of work and change in her art. Sensemann’s work of this type and this photomontage in particular is discussed in the article and has been discussed by art critics cited in the article. |
Replaceable? |
There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Sensemann, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. |
Other information |
The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
