Summary

Description
English: The conventional district tartan of Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands.

The pattern is Black Watch with the normal dark blue changed to a much lighter azure blue. This image is not exactly full-sett, and cannot tile horizontally and vertically; this centred and zoomed-out version was created for tabular comparison to other regimental tartans. Scottish Register of Tartans notes on this pattern [1]: "Same as the Black Watch but usually woven in lighter shades with azure replacing the dark blue of the Black Watch. As worn by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders it is kilted to show the green, whereas with the Black Watch it is kilted to show the blue." However, sources do not agree on use by that regiment, and those that do suggest that a lighter Black Watch was used by the Victorian regiment (including another SRT record) have it with not so bright a blue (Balmoral blue); for that version, see File:93rd Regiment (Sutherland Highlanders) and Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's) tartan, centred, zoomed out.png. A variant with light green instead of light blue is today in regimental use as "Government No. 1A", and seems also to have been used by Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the 20th-21st centuries before their 2006 amalgamation into the Royal Regiment of Scotland. There is no evidence of conventionial use of this sett by Clan Sutherland (see Category:Clan Sutherland tartans).

This is an asymmetric, non-mirroring tartan (full count). Thread count (in "..." notation): ...A24 K4 A4 K4 A4 K20 G24 K6 G24 K20 A24 K4 A4 K4 A24 K20 G24 K6 G24 K20 A4 K4 A4 K4..., where "A" = azure.
