DescriptionTam High Vigil for Parkland School Shooting (25427251787).jpg
I participated in a moving vigil at Tam High School in Mill Valley for the victims of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Students organized this gathering in just a day and hosted nearly a hundred people of all ages, including news cameras from all major networks. They hosted this event at twilight on February 15, 2018, in front of their school’s entrance, passing around candles and orange wristbands to protest gun violence.
They spoke from the heart about this tragedy, what it meant for them and what they plan to do about it. Other community members shared their views as well, including our friends at MVCAN, our political action group. In between speeches, we were invited to talk with people standing next to us, and it was a great opportunity to connect with people of different ages.
We discussed a wide range of actions related to gun rights, mental health and violence, as well as the impact of fear, money and politics. I was inspired by these young people’s commitment to improving our world through constructive political action.
