English: Tapestry Dimensions: H 9'3" x W 11'5". Tapestry Materials/Techniques: unknown. Culture: Flemish. Weaving Center: Brussels. Ownership History: French & Co. Inscriptions: City mark in lower guard, left of center. Inscriptions: Inscriptions in border medallions, at 4 corners (clockwise): ORIENT, OCCIDENT, MID . . . [SEP]TENTRION. Inscriptions: Woven signature in lower guard, right: I COBVS. Personification of Africa holding lance & pointing at lion (center, middle ground), elephant headpiece, sphinx on pedestal (L, middle ground), hunting panoply or pile of weapons with fruits & flowers (foreground), pyramids, palm trees (background). (BRD) floral festoons, urns, busts, cartouches; at 4 corners round medallions showing putto & inscriptions. This panel is part of a set of 4 tapestries, either woven by Jacob Van der Borght or Jan Cobus, who have signed tapestries in the set.
