Summary

Description This large abandoned apartment building stands forlorn over the intersection of Maplewood Avenue and Kinsey Avenue in Cincinnati’s Mount Auburn neighborhood. Constructed in the early 20th Century in the Renaissance Revival style, the building marked the transition of the neighborhood from the large-lot estates and mansions that defined it in the 19th Century to a denser, more mixed-income neighborhood in the 20th Century. Built to cater to an upmarket clientele, the building featured ornate brackets and Corinthian pilaster capitals, as well as a variety of other detailing that was based on the palaces of Renaissance-era Italy. The building also features a large porch structure integrated into the front facade, a unique feature that I haven’t seen much of elsewhere in the city. The building filtered down from the upper class to the middle class, and, by the time it became vacant, it was a low-income apartment building, which fell into such disrepair that the building became abandoned. The building remains empty today, and the sidewalk in front is fenced off in the fear that more ornamentation or masonry would fall off the building, and the place is in a very unfortunate state. Hopefully, it can be rescued and contribute to the revitalization of Mount Auburn, but for now, it remains decrepit despite its architectural merit, size, and potential.
