Summary

Description
English: The Old Crown Inn, Penicuik The notice on the wall of this old coaching inn on the south side of the High Street claims it to be Penicuik's oldest public house. The adjacent archway (on the left out of shot) still has the wooden cobbles that were used to deaden the hoofbeats of any horses leaving under the guests' bedrooms. The building is reputed to have been in use as an inn by 1754 and to have been frequented by "Scotland's notorious body snatchers Burke and Hare".
