Summary

Description
English: The Pentland Road at Carloway The view eastwards along the Pentland Road from Carloway bridge. This single track road runs right across Lewis from Carloway to Stornoway [with a branch to Breascleit] and is well graded throughout. The reason for its lack of steep gradients is due to the fact that it was originally laid out as the trackbed for a railway, planned and funded by Lord Leverhulme, who set out to improve the island economy by setting up commercial fishing fleets which would unload their catches at improved west coast ports, with the fish being transported by rail to processing plants in Stornoway. The fish products would have been retailed through the chain of Macfishery shops [anyone remember those?], but the scheme was abandoned.
