Afrikaans: Die ESO se Baie Groot Teleskoop (BGT) lyk eerder na 'n baie klein teleskoop in hierdie prent! Uit hierdie gesigspunt is dit moeilik om die buitelyne van die BGT se vier 8,2-meter-eenheidsteleskope te onderskei wat op Paranalheuwel in die Chileense Atacamawoestyn gestasioneer is.
Die ligging van die BGT is baie sorgvuldig gekies. Dit is noodsaaklik dat die terrein so droog as moontlik is, aangesien waterdamp infrarooi lig absorbeer wat waarnemings kan belemmer. Om die uitwerking van die Aarde se atmosfeer sover moontlik uit te skakel, is die BGT 2 600 meter bo seespieël opgerig, wat 'n dunner atmosfeerlaag tussen die teleskope en sterre meebring. From this perspective, it is difficult to make out the silhouettes of the VLT’s four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes, which sit atop Cerro Paranal in the Chilean Atacama Desert.
The VLT’s location was very carefully selected. It is vital for the site to be as dry as possible, as water vapour can absorb infrared light and degrade observations. In order to reduce the effects of Earth’s atmosphere as far as possible, the VLT is at 2600 metres above sea level, minimising the amount of atmosphere sitting between it and the stars. Due to its remote location, Paranal manages to be mostly undisturbed and light-free. Even the winding roads that lead through the Atacama Desert to the observation site are dimly lit to avoid unnecessary light pollution. In this image, a trail of stars cuts across the the night sky like smoke rising from a celestial chimney. This is our home galaxy, the Milky Way. Towards the top of the image you can see a brighter and wider section — this is the star-filled galactic bulge, which sits at the heart of the Milky Way.Español: ¡El VLT (Very Large Telescope) de ESO parece un telescopio muy pequeño en esta imagen! Der Standort des VLT wurde sehr sorgfältig ausgewählt. Es ist von entscheidender Bedeutung, dass er so trocken wie möglich ist, da Wasserdampf infrarotes Licht absorbiert und so die Beobachtungen beeinträchtigt. Um die Effekte der Erdatmosphäre weitgehend zu reduzieren, steht das VLT auf 2600 Metern Höhe, wodurch die Menge an Luft minimiert wird, die zwischen dem Teleskop und den Sternen liegt. Aufgrund seines abgelegenen Standorts bleibt Paranal von den zivilisatorischen Einflüssen, insbesondere dem Streulicht, weitgehend unberührt. Selbst die Straßen, die sich durch die Atacamawüste hoch zum Observatorium winden, sind nur spärlich beleuchtet, um unnötige Lichtverschmutzung zu vermeiden. A localização do VLT foi escolhida de modo extremamente cuidadoso. É vital que o local seja tão seco quanto possível, uma vez que o vapor d'água absorve a radiação infravermelha e degrada as observações. De modo a reduzir o máximo possível os efeitos da atmosfera terrestre, o VLT situa-se 2600 metros acima do nível do mar, minimizando assim a quantidade de atmosfera até as estrelas. Devido a esta localização remota, o Paranal é um lugar praticamente imperturbado e livre de poluição luminosa. Até as estradas serpenteantes que conduzem ao local através do deserto do Atacama estão fracamente iluminadas de modo a evitar luz desnecessária. Nesta imagem, uma trilha de estrelas corta o céu noturno, tal como fumaça subindo através de uma chaminé celeste. Trata-se da nossa casa galática, a Via Láctea. Em direção ao topo da imagem vemos uma seção mais brilhante e larga, que corresponde ao bojo galáctico repleto de estrelas e que se situa no coração da Via Láctea. |
