This subalpine to alpine bunchgrass is very slender and typically occurs as one to few stems per bunch and without much leafy mass to the basal leaf bunch. The leaf blades are generally short (not much more than a few cm long) and wide (about 4-6 mm) and the glumes are typically dark purple, with an acute tip, and completely envelop the two florets inside. Each of the florets is uniformly awned from the back of the lemma and the bent awn just emerges from the glumes as the seed matures.
